Proud To Have Been A Part Of Sony’s Success

2009 was Sony’s best year ever, grossing over $3.5 billion worldwide. Yesterday AdAge reported that Sony credits its success to the quality of its movies followed by a strong, adaptive approach to generating online buzz even after opening weekend. And to that we say hell yes, we couldn’t agree more.

Huge congratulations to our clients Dwight Caines, Jaime Kramer, Lisa Pendse, Joe Epstein, Amy Conley and the rest of the team on an awesome, awesome year. Thank you for letting us be a part of your success and we look forward to lots of home runs in the future. What do you say we do another ARG together real soon?

Whiteboard Wall is Back

The relationship between Nicole and whiteboard wall must have taken quite the toll on the other LA Something Massiveites, because as of today, whiteboard wall has permanently moved to Nicole’s corner of the office. And by that I mean that whiteboard wall has multiplied beyond the shared work space, with additions not only to Nicole’s corner but also to the conference room.

Today is a great day. “Sharing” may never be needed again.

Something Massive attends Creative Mornings – Michael Beirut

My friend and colleague, Tina Roth Eisenberg (aka Swiss Miss), hosts the fabulous Creative Mornings series here in NYC. This morning I, along with more than 300 other Creatives, had the opportunity and pleasure to hear an inspiring, though-provoking and reassuring talk by Michael Beirut. The event took place at the Galapagos Performance and Art space just blocks from our Brooklyn studio. His talk was all about clients and why we need to be thankful for the great clients who push us and allow us to do the work we all get to do. He called out ten of his best clients and showed us the work that they have enabled him to do – everything from the new bags for Sak’s Fifth Avenue to the beautiful and epic signage for the new New York Times building. It was definitely worth an early morning subway ride to hear this talk and be part of the top-notch NYC design community.

At all Creative Morning events all attendees wear “name tags” which are actually “conversation starters.” The night before the event, you are emailed  a template to print out with a question you need to answer. For this event the question was “If I could wish for any speaker it would be…” My answer (pictured above) was the late Saul Bass. See more responses on the Creative Morning Flickr page (where I grabbed all the pics for this post).

A New Office Relationship

Nicole, meet whiteboard wall. Whiteboard wall, meet Nicole.

It may not be “Facebook official” yet, but it was love at first site. From day one, Nicole and whiteboard wall have been inseparable. At this point the other LA Something Massivites are pretty annoyed at the constant displays of affection. Even the Brooklyn office is starting to notice. Maybe they are going a bit overboard, or maybe it’s just pure jealousy, but regardless, this is a relationship that is sure to go the distance.

Nicole will share with clients when they come to Venice for a brainstorm. Just don’t hold the dry erase marker for too long.

IP phones: All your eggs in one basket?

fonality

We moved to IP phones a month back (commonly called VOIP – Voice over IP ) and for the most part have been very pleased. The hiccups have been minor and worth the effort. If your considering moving to an Ip-phone system perhaps my experiences in the past month will be useful to you.

For  our Agency we wanted to have the features a new phone system would offer, Automated answering, Call routing based off of keypad press, customized voice prompts, hold music etc.  Being an interactive agency we felt comfortable moving to an IP based solution but there are few things you should keep in mind.

Hardware

While many system offer plug an play compatibility with your existing Internet connection, in reality you might need to purchase new gearor upgrade your internet connection, we did both. In our instance we had to buy a new managed switch with QOS (Quality of Service) and upgrade our T-1 to a bonded 3 mb line. Both of these expenditures are not really brought in the sales conversation with a provider and could effect your projections.

A new “PBX like” PC

Its the brain behind the system, some providers will offer you a hosted version of this on a per line basis and it has its upside if your number of employees is somewhat static, but if you have a growing company (yeah!) then you can easily save money by buying the system. We went with FONALITY And like the machine so far. This system comes with a version of trixbox the open source software for telephony. Yes you can download it yourself, but the cost of the system from FONALITY and the followup support are worth the money to us.
