Something Massive attends Creative Mornings – Michael Beirut

My friend and colleague, Tina Roth Eisenberg (aka Swiss Miss), hosts the fabulous Creative Mornings series here in NYC. This morning I, along with more than 300 other Creatives, had the opportunity and pleasure to hear an inspiring, though-provoking and reassuring talk by Michael Beirut. The event took place at the Galapagos Performance and Art space just blocks from our Brooklyn studio. His talk was all about clients and why we need to be thankful for the great clients who push us and allow us to do the work we all get to do. He called out ten of his best clients and showed us the work that they have enabled him to do – everything from the new bags for Sak’s Fifth Avenue to the beautiful and epic signage for the new New York Times building. It was definitely worth an early morning subway ride to hear this talk and be part of the top-notch NYC design community.

At all Creative Morning events all attendees wear “name tags” which are actually “conversation starters.” The night before the event, you are emailed  a template to print out with a question you need to answer. For this event the question was “If I could wish for any speaker it would be…” My answer (pictured above) was the late Saul Bass. See more responses on the Creative Morning Flickr page (where I grabbed all the pics for this post).

Something Massive Attends An Event Apart SF

The latest in the long-running An Event Apart conferences took place in San Francisco earlier this week and I was fortunate enough to be an attendee. The conference, which is dubbed “For People Who Make Websites,” was filled with excellent speakers on a wide range of topics – all full of enlightening and inspiring information. Jeffery Zeldman’s talk on designing for clients vs. designing for one’s self was especially good while Ethan Marcotte’s presentation titled “Comps vs. Code: Couples’ Therapy” featured one of the best looking Keynotes I’d seen in ages. The highlight was probably Jared Spool’s hilarious and insightful talk about why just because Amazon does something doesn’t mean you should too. Overall, it was two days of worth of dialogue from some of the more interesting people in our industry. The notebooks are full, the sketchbooks are overflowing,  the fire is lit beneath me,  let’s get these hands dirty with some new work.

P.S. Couldn’t resist including this stunning piece of typographic signage on the Rincon Center Post Office in SF. They don’t make ‘em like they used to.
