Julia: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Actually, that would more accurately be represented as Hair Yesteday, Gone Today. Yes it’s true, one more Something Massivite has bit the bullet and chopped off her locks for love. And this time it’s me, Julia!

This was sort of a momentous occasion for me, made more nerve-wracking since my usual hair dresser moved to Austin, TX while I’ve been growing out these locks this last year (I had no idea!). So today I had to take my big, thick, curly mane to someone totally new. She came highly recommended by a friend but since her salon was destroyed by the Nashville Flood this last May, she’s working from a small little studio on Music Row. Walking up, I learned it is not the kind of shiny salon I’m used to at all and I prepared myself for the worst. But then I realized that getting a bad haircut in no way, shape or form comes anywhere close to what it must feel like for kids with cancer to go through treatment, lose their hair, and feel sick most of the time. With that, I schlepped myself right in there and went for it!!

Here are the locks before:

And here I am after:

(My hairdresser was egging me on with that last one.)

It’s super short! But I’m happy with the outcome and would suggest donating hair to anyone. You can check out more here. Especially in these tough economic times, it’s an excellent way to make a huge difference in someone else’s life by using the resources you have on hand, or errr … on head.

Cooking With My Kid on Craft Once Again

Cooking With My Kid makes a return appearance on Craft this week. And not only that, when we met with some new Chicago contacts this week, several people knew the blog unprompted. Does this mean our Founder’s mommy blog is becoming a household name? Well, maybe not quite but the traffic sure is impressive. Here’s the latest from Craft …

How To: Bite-Sized Greek Salad

Cooking With My Kid has quickly become one of my very favorite blogs. The recipes are simple, but still interesting, and even if you don’t have a kid you’ll want to try them. This latest recipe is no exception. How brilliant are these bite-sized Greek salads? They would be a great way to get your child to eat some healthy veggies (and being able to assemble them on their own scores big bonus points) and they’d work great for party snacks. Love it!

Cooking With My Kid on Ohdeedoh

We’ve had an excellent time watching Rebecca’s mommy blog Cooking With My Kid take off. Rebecca has used her social media savvy to score all kinds of exciting mentions. Her most recent coup is a placement on Ohdeedoh.com, part of the extremely popular ApartmentTherapy network. Apartment Therapy Media reaches over 4.3M unique visitors per month. That’s no small audience and quite a testament to Rebecca that her content made the cut. Rebecca’s audience is growing by the week and now reaches over 50,000 uniques. From Ohdeedoh …

Baked Apple Donuts

There’s not much that would prompt us to turn on the stove in this heat, but we’ll make a notable exception for these baked apple donuts. Donuts have always been a favorite, but we found the notion of frying them to be intimidating. Rebecca of Cooking With My Kid discovered that you can bake them – with delicious results. This information may just revolutionize our weekends.

Two Down, Five to Go

Well, Jacqueline actually beat me to the chopping block, but I came in a close second. As of this weekend my 10 inch ponytail is no longer. Fun fact: My hair is so thick that the scissors nearly broke mid-chop!

I’m beyond thrilled with the new look AND with my first Locks of Love donation.

Plenty more to go! If you happen to see Rebecca, Dana, Julia, Misti, or Jackie give them some words of encouragement… the wait is long but it’s beyond worth it.

Hair Tales

Ready for a Locks of Love spring update? The Something Massive ladies have been busy and some changes are in the works.

First, let’s welcome Misti to our club. Or… hopefully welcome Misti. She’s still undecided but her long, beautiful locks would be perfect for our goal so we’re upping the peer pressure.

Next, our first ponytail chop is on the books! It’s officially the 3-week countdown for Nicole, who will be the first to donate 10 inches. Unless of course Jacqueline steps up her game and takes the plunge, who has been holding out for some time now.
